Rachel & Austin's Church of the Epiphany Wedding in Miami
Miami, Florida
A church ceremony and a reception at the EPIC Hotel
Rachel and Austin's Church of the Epiphany wedding was a full-church celebration, with a long aisle, a big guest list and a reception downtown afterward. I had also photographed their courthouse engagement session, so this day felt familiar from the start.
The morning began with the details: the blue and white invitation suite, ivory heels and the gown hanging by a window. Rachel got ready in a white robe with her bridesmaids in matching light blue robes and a bottle of champagne. Austin's portraits were simple, a dark wall, suspenders and a bow tie. I also made a few black and white portraits of Rachel in her veil.
The ceremony was at Church of the Epiphany in Miami. The front of the building has a tall pointed arch window, and inside there is a high wood ceiling and a large cross above the altar. The aisle is long, so I moved around to photograph the processional, the vows and the recessional from different spots. At the end, Rachel's veil spread across the floor and the two of them walked back up the aisle while guests cheered.
After the ceremony we did the wedding party on the altar steps, then walked outside to a path lined with palm trees for portraits, including a few black and white frames next to a vintage white car.
The reception was at the EPIC Hotel in downtown Miami. The room had round tables, pastel flowers, glass candle holders and hanging globe lights. This is where the first dance, the toasts, the cake and the dance floor happened, and I switched to black and white for much of the dancing.
If you're planning a Church of the Epiphany wedding or another church wedding in Miami, here is what I tell couples. Ask the parish early what photography is allowed during the ceremony and share it with me so I can plan where to stand. Leave time after the ceremony for the altar steps and family photos before guests leave. And if you're planning an EPIC Hotel wedding or another downtown reception, keep the trip from the church to the hotel short so portraits are not rushed.
