An engagement session at the courthouse in downtown Miami

Rachel and Austin did their engagement session at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse in downtown Miami, and these courthouse engagement photos are some of my favorites from that kind of shoot. I also photographed their wedding at Church of the Epiphany, with the reception at the EPIC Hotel, so it was good to work with them twice.

We started on the courthouse steps. The tall stone columns and wide steps give you plenty of room to move, so we kept it simple: walking up hand in hand, a spin, a few kisses. Rachel wore white, both as a long gown and as a shorter dress with a train.

Then we moved to the street, where a vintage blue Mustang convertible was waiting. The car adds color against all that gray stone, and it gave them something to lean on, sit in and laugh in. We finished back on the steps with sunglasses and a bottle of champagne.

If you're planning a downtown Miami engagement session, here is what I tell my couples. Pick two or three spots that are close together so we spend our time shooting instead of driving. A courthouse works well because the steps and columns sit next to quiet streets, so you get stone and street in the same hour. Choose early morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and downtown is calmer. Wear something you can move in, because I will ask you to walk, spin and sit on stone steps. And bring one thing that is yours, like a car or a drink, so the photos feel like you.
