A courthouse wedding in downtown Miami

Victoria and Daniel had a courthouse wedding in downtown Miami. These Miami-Dade courthouse wedding photos start where I like to start: on the stone steps and under the tall columns of the old Miami-Dade County Courthouse, with the two of them close together and nothing else to worry about.

The steps were our first stop. The light was strong and the columns threw long shadows across the stairs, which is a big part of why courthouse steps wedding photos look the way they do. We walked hand in hand across the plaza, sat down on the steps and kept it easy. Victoria wore a white beaded dress and Daniel wore a dark suit.

From there we walked around downtown. A red vintage convertible was parked on the street in front of the courthouse, and it turned into some of my favorite downtown Miami wedding portraits: the two of them leaning on it, laughing in its seats, plus a few detail shots of Daniel's hand on the wooden steering wheel and Victoria's ring.

We stayed until the light faded. The last photos are back on the courthouse steps at dusk, with the lamps on behind them and a bottle they opened to celebrate.

If you're planning something like this, here's what I tell my couples. The ceremony itself happens at the Clerk's office, not at the historic courthouse on Flagler Street, so we head over to the old courthouse afterward for portraits. Weekdays work best, and later in the day the light is softer and the heat is easier on everyone. That is how I plan Miami-Dade courthouse wedding photos.
