A courthouse wedding in downtown Miami

Carina and Billy got married at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse in downtown Miami. This Miami courthouse elopement shows why I like shooting here: the building does most of the work. Tall stone columns, wide steps, deep shade on the walkways, and the two of them in the middle of it.

We started on the steps. Carina wore a short white dress and a veil, Billy wore a black suit, and they sat close with her white bouquet next to them. Then Carina put on a pair of white sunglasses and Billy put on his own, and those turned into some of my favorite courthouse elopement photos. The cover photo is from that stretch.

From the steps we moved to the walkway under the columns. The sun was low and the shade gave us clean, quiet backgrounds. We walked hand in hand, stopped for a kiss, and sat against the courthouse wall under one of the tall windows. A short wedding dress at the courthouse works well here: it moves easily on the steps, and the plain stone stays out of its way.

Near the end Billy picked Carina up on the plaza, and we finished on the steps with a bottle spraying beside them. I also made black and white frames of the two of them and of Carina's veil, because the stone and the shadows look good without color.

If you are planning a Miami courthouse elopement of your own, late afternoon gives the softest light here, and the columns throw long shadows across the steps. That is when I like to take Miami elopement photos at this courthouse.
