Vizcaya Engagement Photos: Permits, Best Spots & Tips

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is one of the most beautiful places in Miami for engagement photos. Stone arches, fountains, formal gardens and views of Biscayne Bay make it feel like you've stepped into Europe without leaving the city. I photographed Victoria & Leo's engagement session there, and it's still one of my favorites.

As a Miami wedding photographer, Vizcaya is one of my favorite places in the city for engagement sessions, and this guide covers everything to know before yours.

This guide covers the history, the best photo spots, how Vizcaya's photo permits work and tips to make your session easy.

About Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Vizcaya was built mainly between 1914 and 1922 as the winter estate of James Deering, with architect F. Burrall Hoffman, design director Paul Chalfin and landscape architect Diego Suarez. Today it's a museum and a National Historic Landmark, with formal gardens that are some of the most photographed in South Florida.

The Best Engagement Photo Spots at Vizcaya

1. The Stone Arches and Carved Details

Vizcaya's arches, columns and carved stone frame couples beautifully and give your photos that old-world, editorial feel.

2. The Formal Gardens

Hedges, paths, fountains and sculptures make the gardens perfect for walking photos, twirls and wide shots that show off the whole setting.

3. Arbors and Quiet Corners

Some of my favorite frames come from the smaller, greener corners of the gardens, where it feels like you have the place to yourselves.

How Vizcaya Photo Permits Work

Vizcaya requires a permit for portrait sessions. Here's what to know, based on Vizcaya's photography and filming page:

  • Book online in advance. There are no walk-in permits, and there's a daily limit.

  • Portrait permits are currently listed at $250 on weekdays and $350 on weekends, for up to 5 people.

  • Early access in the morning is available at a higher rate, and so is a permit that includes the house.

  • Hours are 9:30am to 4:30pm, and Vizcaya is closed on Tuesdays.

  • Gardens only on a standard permit. Keep paths clear and skip wagons, luggage and pets.

Prices and rules can change, so always confirm on Vizcaya's site. I'm happy to help you pick the right permit and time.

Tips for Your Vizcaya Engagement Photos

  • Book your permit first, then lock in the time with me, since permits are limited each day.

  • Go early if you can. Morning access means softer light and fewer visitors in your photos.

  • Dress for the setting. Formal, romantic looks match the architecture.

  • Wear comfortable shoes between spots. The gardens are big, so bring heels for photos and flats for walking.

  • Pair it with a second location. Coconut Grove is next door if you want a second look before sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a permit for engagement photos at Vizcaya?

Yes. Vizcaya requires a photography permit for portrait sessions, including when you bring a designated photographer. Permits are booked online in advance (no walk-ins) and there is a daily limit, so book early. See Vizcaya's photography page for current details.

How much is a Vizcaya photo permit?

At the time of writing, Vizcaya lists portrait permits at $250 on weekdays and $350 on weekends for up to 5 people, with a premium early-access option and an indoor house and garden option at higher rates. Prices can change, so check Vizcaya's site before booking.

What are the best times for photos at Vizcaya?

Vizcaya is open 9:30am to 4:30pm and closed on Tuesdays. Early access in the morning gives you the gardens with soft light and fewer people, and late afternoon gives warmer light before closing.

Can we take photos inside the Vizcaya house?

Standard portrait permits cover the gardens. Vizcaya offers a separate, higher-priced permit if you want to include the house.

What should we wear for Vizcaya engagement photos?

Vizcaya's architecture and gardens are formal and romantic, so elevated looks work beautifully: a flowing gown or dress, a suit or tailored separates, and comfortable shoes for walking between the gardens.
